Yay...I am so happy you posted/shared this. Because of you, I was able to record this movie (the first time it aired on TCM). I had never heard of it before...thank you bringing it into viewers' homes.

Like Topbilled, I had never heard of it until it premiered on TCM many years ago. My girlfriend and I watched it together and, to this day, we use "Went the day well" as a code phrase for "something isn't quite right here is it?"

Don't recall ever hearing of the movie. Or noticing it on the schedule my cable guide provides.
Now my curiosity is whetted. I'll damn sure keep an eye out for it now. Thanks.

Same for me about finding this movie - two thumbs way up on this one. I stumbled across it by accident just looking for old war movies I might have overlooked. Seeing it without any preconceived notions, reading any reviews or watching a trailer made it all the more unsettling. I was tempted to post an image or trailer here but best to go in totally blind imho.

I also didn't notice that Went the Day Well was going to be shown. Looks like I missed a film worth seeing.
Ealing Studios created a lot of very fine productions (movies and T.V.), and due to my over focus on American studio era films, I know there are gems out there I need to seek.

Have seen quite a few movies from Ealing and can't think of a single one that I didn't like. 👍

I tried to upload the movie with the intros but it falls under copyright which was very disappointing.
As far as I know it's only aired the two times. It's definitely one TCM should show more often.

Do you mind explaining to those who may be interested in reading, the process of filming the wraparounds...? Were those done in Atlanta or Los Angeles?
I know we talked about this before, but wasn't it that you were not chosen to fill in that spot until almost the last minute? Or am I misremembering...?

I know we talked about this before, but wasn't it that you were not chosen to fill in that spot until almost the last minute? Or am I misremembering...?You are correct. I was a last minute replacement - sort-of.
I had been selected and then told the powers that be felt I had already been a presence on TCM from some on-air appearances at the festivals. Naturally I was HUGELY disappointed they felt this way but I understood. I don't recall how much time it was in between when they called back and said the other person couldn't make it and I was back in.
The wrap-arounds were shot in Atlanta. There were twenty people selected at that time and they filmed ten of us on successive days. Generally they were shot in one take. In my case there was a hick-up of some kind and we had to reshoot the ending of the wrap-up.
It remains and will always be one of the highlights of my life as it was something I always hoped to do. How often do you get to say that? And now with Robert gone it seems like a dream.

Thanks for explaining. Did you meet the other 19...was there a publicity photo featuring Robert and all 20 fan programmers?
One thing I remember is when they announced the contest, the submissions had to be done via video I think. I can only imagine how many submissions they had to sift through before choosing the final 20.

Yes, we all met each other during a fantastic meet and greet party on that iconic set with the red chairs. Robert Osborne and other TCM staff folks attended and gave us a heads up as to what was going to happen. Many of us are still in touch from time to time. We shared an experience we all knew was special. Something like that binds you forever!

Envious of your experience; I know it was a truly special occasion to visit that TCM set and sit across from Robert. I look forward to checking out Went the Day Well, sounds like it has a very interesting concept and thank you for joining the new forums here. Your tribute post to Robert on the TCM forums was very touching.

I guess it's obvious that I had a great admiration for Robert Osborne.
Beyond his knowledge and experiences regarding Old Hollywood and the people who inhabited it I looked to him as a person to emulate. I didn't know him well enough at all to call him a friend. However, watching how he dealt with me and and other folks at the festivals and how he carried himself as a gentleman left me inspired to try and be a better person. More patient with anonymous people who intrude upon my daily life. Trying to better myself in those areas where I feel I need improvement.
I sincerely miss his presence on TCM.

I would like to add an addendum on Robert Osborne...
I find one of life's most inspiring moments is when a person finds the thing that brings them to a place which allows them to be their very best.
Robert Osborne had all that knowledge and familiarity with some of the greatest Hollywood stars. He brought it all together on TCM where he could share that knowledge with all of us. It was something that brought him accolades and millions of admirers.
What a wonderful thing and how wonderful for him that he knew he was so greatly appreciated by classic film lovers. What would the world be like if everyone could experience that feeling.
