I can't tell you how much it troubled me to see Edmund Gwenn trying to push Joel McCrea off the church tower in Foreign Correspondent, then going over the side himself. Noooo. Not that sweet old man! I'm glad he didn't get used that way a lot, but it's also nice to know he had it in him as an actor.

I can't tell you how much it troubled me to see Edmund Gwenn trying to push Joel McCrae off the church tower in Foreign Correspondent, then going over the side himself. Noooo. Not that sweet old man! I'm glad he didn't get used that way a lot, but it's also nice to know he had it in him as an actor. I felt the same way - very off brand for the usually kind and affable Gwenn. But also as you note, the man was an actor, as he was convincing in the bad-guy role.
That said, his portrayal of Santa is still my favorite movie Santa of them all.

Incidentally, Gwenn was directed by Hitchcock in two British films during the 1930s...a drama called THE SKIN GAME (1931) and an operetta called WALTZES FROM VIENNA (1934). Yes, Hitchcock directed an operetta!
So, by the time they got to FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT, they were old chums.
Gwenn's last screen credit, per the IMDb, was a 1957 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (not directed by Hitchcock).
