This month, I thought I'd pick a blacklisted director who succeeded despite all the opposition he faced.
Jules Dassin started in the 1930s in the theater and on radio. His first contract with a major Hollywood studio occurred at RKO around 1940, where he was given jobs as an assistant director. But he was dropped by RKO a short time later and went over to MGM. In 1941 he directed his first film on his own, a short film that earned considerable praise. Metro bosses liked what they saw and promoted him to directing feature programmers. He worked his way up from there.
Here are two of Dassin's MGM programmers starring Marsha Hunt:
THE AFFAIRS OF MARTHA (1942)
A LETTER FOR EVIE (1945)

Big fan of Jules Dassin, so it is nice to see him get some notice. After WWII ended, Dassin directed some solid noir films; Two Smart People (Lucy Ball in yet another noir, also with John Hodiak), Brute Force (Lancaster), The Naked City, Thieves Highway (Conte and Italian actress Valentia Cortese), and my favorite Night and the City (Widmark and a host of fine English actors).
Once in Europe he came back with a splash in the French noir Rififi, and went on with his career.

Also, I just recently watched his "Topkapi" and was thoroughly entertained.

As I noted earlier in this thread, "Rififi" is a top ten, maybe five, noir of all time for me and earns Dassin and the French an iconic perch in film noir lore.
My comments on "Rififi" here: "Rififi"

I was late to the RIFIFI party, having just seen it for the first time a year ago. But yes, it is one of the best heist films ever made.
