Paulette Goddard was originally under contract to David Selznick in the late 30s, but her services were also shared with Charlie Chaplin. She did two films with the legendary comic, and both are regarded as classics. When she failed to nab the part of Scarlett O’Hara in GONE WITH THE WIND, she headed over to Paramount, which proved to be a smart move. Starting in 1939, she had several comedy hits with Bob Hope, but she was skilled at dramatic parts and adventure stories, which made her a natural lead for several Cecil B. DeMille pictures. During the next ten years, she appeared in 21 Paramount productions and though not every one of those was a hit, there's no denying that Paulette Goddard was one of the studio’s important stars.

There was something essentially wholesome about her, so that even when she played a crass opportunist like Kitty we're still on her side. It's no wonder she came so close to playing Scarlett.

There was something essentially wholesome about her, so that even when she played a crass opportunist like Kitty we're still on her side. It's no wonder she came so close to playing Scarlett. If she had played Scarlett, she probably would have remained under contract to Selznick, meaning she would have done some of the types of films Vivien Leigh did or Jennifer Jones did...and she probably wouldn't have been able to stretch her acting muscles. At Paramount, she expanded her range by doing those comedies with Bob Hope and had a chance to dance with Fred Astaire.
I agree that there's an ironically wholesome quality lurking underneath the surface of her more promiscuous characters. KITTY features her best, most memorable film performance.
But I think my favorite Paulette Goddard movie is STANDING ROOM ONLY. She's really good doing a social satire with Fred MacMurray.
