An adaptation of Agatha Christie mystery: Cast of stars has Angela Lansbury as Miss Jane Marple and includes Elizabeth Taylor, Geraldine Chaplin, Edward Fox, Kim Novak, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis.
The oddest moment: Miss Marple smoking a cigarette. Never mentioned in the Christie books or in another tv or movie adaptation that Miss Marple smoked. In fact, I don't remember seeing Angela smoke in a film or did she in MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE?

In fact, I don't remember seeing Angela smoke in a film or did she in MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE? I'm a big Agatha Christie / Miss Marple fan, but I'm not in the least offended by the over-the-top camp approach to the material in this movie, particularly with the overdone Kim Novak and Tony Curtis characterizations. It's intended to be fun and it is, especially for classic movie fans who were essentially bidding some of these stars farewell in their close-to-final movie appearances. It's a great time capsule in that respect and, even with some of the high jinks and catty dialogue, the mystery plays out quite well. Good catch with Miss Marple smoking. Angela smoked in The World of Henry Orient (1964). I couldn't find evidence in the obvious place, a restaurant scene with Peter Sellers, but she's carrying a cigarette here, at home. She also smoked in the black comedy Something for Everyone (1970), which was post- Mame, so I think people were maybe expecting to see her characters smoke at that point.

I agree THE MIRROR CRACK'D is a fun movie.
It was seeing Miss Marple smoke that caused me to think whether I remembered Lansbury smoking. If Lansbury played a different character in MIRROR, I probably wouldn't have noticed the cigarette.

If Lansbury played a different character in MIRROR, I probably wouldn't have noticed the cigarette. I wonder if Angela had any input there, because you're right that it's not a conventional choice for the character. My local PBS reran the Marples recently enough that I can remember both Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie not smoking. I love those shows, but the funny thing is that when I watched the Julia McKenzie version ("The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side") I found myself missing the zaniness of the more in-your-face filmed version. Apparently it's been done as a play too, which I'd be very interested in seeing.
