Every afternoon at 3 p.m., my Grandparents sat at the kitchen table with a cup and saucer of coffee. My Grandpa poured some coffee into the saucer, blew on it to cool and drink from the saucer. My Grandma would sit and wait for hers to cool before sipping from the cup. In the old films seeing people drink coffee from cups and saucers reminds me of my grandparents.
It also seems incredible to me today how small those servings of coffee were compared to the enormous mugs and styrofoam cups I see people drink from. And what about those mixing bowl size cups on FRIENDS? I've noticed that we gulp down coffee like water, while my grandparents and in the movies they sip. Maybe coffee was a luxury years ago.

And I would add some of those cups came as free items inside food product items like oatmeal, at least they did up here in the great white north.

And what about those mixing bowl size cups on FRIENDS? I've noticed that we gulp down coffee like water, while my grandparents and in the movies they sip. Maybe coffee was a luxury years ago. They actually sat down and enjoyed the coffee. They made the effort to take a break from what otherwise occupied them, sat down together, enjoyed their cup of coffee. Way more enjoyable -- and, dare I say, sophisticated -- than lugging around everywhere you go one of those oversized things you mentioned.
My daily dishes are the dailies my grandmother used in the early 1950s. They have the proper six-ounce sized cups with saucers, which we use nearly daily. It is a joy to take the couple of minutes required to drink coffee or tea from them. It stays hot until we are done because it is a small amount, it makes taking the break to come back in a couple of hours for more feel really special, and I'm convinced that it simply makes the beverage taste better. This could be because enjoying it in this fashion makes one fully present for the experience. Sometimes I grab a twice-the-size mug from the cabinet instead, but it's never as satisfying.

I had to check out this thread because I am addicted to coffee! - I admit it.
I agree - I love to watch the way they drank coffee from cups and saucers in classic films. I wonder when did that stop for the majority of people? I'm glad to hear it hasn't stopped for everyone.
I notice when I'm watching a 'Hallmark' movie, how all the characters are walking around the town after visiting the town coffee shop, with their paper coffee cups. Society has changed. Just like I wonder when did women stop wearing gloves and hats? - that's another thing I love to view when watching a classic movie!
