Good one (Georgie Fame). At the time some of my friends thought the whole "British Invasion" was a lot of opportunistic Beatles knockoffs, but some really good music came out of it. The Searchers didn't chart all that much in the States, but I loved their sound.
And in England, just like here, rock was competing for radio play with folk music. Dusty Springfield and her brother were part of a folk-ish trio and I liked this single.

Mary's "You Beat Me to the Punch" is one stupendous hit. The perfect pop song, perfectly sung by her. It had crossed my mind several times to post it here, but it was always absent from my thoughts when I was at the keyboard. Excellent choice, I Love Melvin.
The spring of 1964 was such a dynamic time for change - the Beatles taking over the charts with a fury while a horde of British acts were just beginning to flood in their wake. American artists were in for competition like they'd never known before.
Brand new was one who somehow managed to break in with an album of gentle ballads. This was the follow up single to his first charter "See the Funny Little Clown". Though "Whenever He Holds You" was not a smash hit in that Brit Invasion era, it impressed me with its quiet, heartfelt ambience.

Bobby Vee was clearly influenced by Buddy Holly and even released a Holly tribute album, but this one is almost too eerily close to Holly's specific vocalizations. But I get it and respect his respect. And he was no one-hit-wonder, charting many times and racking up a number of gold records.

I'm in shock. Seriously. I always assumed this was written by Brian Wilson because their recording was so integrated into the trademark Beach Boys sound. I guess you're never too old to learn something.

An especially big star that The Mickey Mouse Club managed to produce hit the charts with this in the summer of 1960.
