Sonja Henie shouldn’t have been a movie star, but somehow she was. Maybe it was because she came along when the country most desperately needed escapist entertainment. Dealing with the Great Depression and the onset of a World War, audiences appreciated the diversions offered by an ice skating star. Her films were light and fun, and they often paired her with the best leading men at the studio. She worked with Tyrone Power, and she also worked with John Payne and Ray Milland. After her movie career ended, she continued to enthrall audiences who came to see her at touring ice shows.
