OK. I'll admit it. I love character actors. Practically all of them. But there are some . . . While I can think of a few who drive me mad, top of mind are my most annoying: Una O'Connor (Did this woman ever not cackle and screech? Did she ever play anyone resembling a normal human being??) Hugh Herbert (I know he was placed in many films for "comic relief" but, 100% of the time it was just "major annoyance.) Who are the character actors who set your teeth on edge?  Lydecker |

Ken Curtis played Festus on Gunsmoke. He played similar annoying characters in film. He stayed on Gunsmoke long enough that other people like him. But he always seemed to be playing someone intentionally annoying.

Lydecker Those two actors top my list for most annoying as it relates to film. As for T.V. - It is Ken Curtis and the character of Festus. Before he was cast as Festus, Curtis played other characters on Gunsmoke, and these were "normal" and not annoying. Thus, I can't really fault Curtis for how Festus was portrayed. (since I tend to blame the producers (of a TV show), or the Director (for movies). (well unless the actor IS the producer or director). PS: I know I'm not being very creative here. Thus, I'll try to think of some additional really annoying character actors. |

I usually like most character actors (including those mentioned here).
But one whom I do find annoying is Hans Conried. Whether in movies like SUMMER STOCK or TV shows like I Love Lucy, I find him annoying. To his credit, the characters he played usually seem to have been written with the intention of making them annoying, so he certainly showed talent in achieving that quality.

Christopher Lloyd. I can't stand him.
I like Una O'Connor, though. She gave a fairly subdued performance as the tobacconist in Random Harvest.

Good point about actors cast in roles like Conried was. These characters were intended to be irritating but by the end of the story often showed they were more than that. Conried will always have a place in my heart due to Fractured Flickers from my childhood. |

Great idea for a thread, Lydecker.
Mabel Albertson got on my nerves. She played Darrin's mother on Bewitched and always stuck her nose in Darrin and Samantha's business.
Hans Conried has been mentioned. For any Disney fans out there, Conried was the voice of Captain Hook in Peter Pan.

I watched the preview for TCM's showing of MAHOGANY. She's not a character actor, but I don't like Diana Ross. I'm mystified why. Love her singing, I did like her performance as Billy Holiday and even in THE WIZ. I took a few moments to think what I don't like and I come up with nothing. I remembered this thread and reread everyone's comments. It's a mystery what causes us to not like actors we don't even know.

Billie Burke. There is only so much of the high-pitched twittery speech of hers I can take, if I'm being honest. I suppose I don't mind her in roles where she's a bit more subdued, but it's hard for me to handle things like "Dinner at Eight" or "Merrily We Live."
