Celebrating Bruce Lee's (November 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973) birthday today. Found a good version of Dragon. It's still one of my favorite martial arts films that's about turn 50. Wonder if they'll do an anniversary blu ray...
Enter The Dragon (1973, Robert Clouse/Bruce Lee) A secret agent comes to an opium lord's island fortress with other fighters for a martial-arts tournament. Free (with ads) on Roku.

War of the Worlds (2005, Steven Spielberg) H.G. Wells classic via a contemporary suburban New Jersey family setting.
One of the few of Spielberg's films that I actually enjoy watching over and over again. Admittedly, Tom Cruise's presence is half the attraction. Rarely is he as vulnerable as he is here (I don't mean the sappy Jerry McGuire "You Complete Me" posturing) probably because the younger actors allowed him to open up emotionally without posing a threat, although the relationship with the son is certainly challenging. The special effects are fun and Spielberg's usual visual ploys work to their best effect, save the awful Hallmark channel ending. Otherwise, fun. Free on the Roku Channel. (There are ads that any decent free adblocker will eliminate for uninterrupted viewing). The short Cruise-Spielberg conversation above makes a nice intro to the film.

New month. A few new titles (out of hundreds) actually worth checking out. The Amityville Horror (1979, Stuart Rosenberg) Newlyweds and their three children move into a large house where a mass murder was committed. They start to experience strange, inexplicable manifestations which have strong effects on everyone living in or visiting the house.
Been waiting to watch this one for years. One of the classic haunted house yarns whose chief thrill for me will be the 70s look on James Brolin and Margot Kidder and an undoubtedly comic “scariness”. Rod Steiger’s appearance lends a little gravitas - and, of course, the movie is based on a legendary Long Island mansion. Halloween, another horror classic from that year, was legitimately frightening but talking houses?? Should be fun in any case. Free on the Roku Channel. Great intro documentary above.

THE UNIVERSE (2007-2015) This educational show explores many scientific questions and topics about the universe (Big Bang, the Sun, the planets, black holes, other galaxies, astrobiology etc.) through latest CGI, data and interviews with scientists. The Roku Channel is currently streaming Seasons 1-7 of the History Channel's classic 8 season series. Some of the info underlines what I already know but there's been incredible amount of knowledge discovered about the universe - certainly since I left school. Some have complained that the series' approach is unnecessarily dumbed down (particularly in regard to its attempt to make the content "relatable" and/or "contemporary") but, overall, I think it's an exceptional presentation. Free on Roku.
