TOP O' THE MORNIN' TO YA!
It's St Patrick's Day, a day of four leaf clovers, celtic hornpipes, wearin' of the green, and leprechauns!
Today is a day to celebrate your Irish ancestry. Even if your family moved out of Ireland for generations, Tommy Steele in HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE proclaims that you will "Always be Irish."
If you're not Irish at all, you get to just to pretend to be Irish. According to this song from FLIGHT OF THE DOVES, "You don't have to be Irish to be Irish!"
St Patrick's Day is a also a great excuse to watch Irish themed movies, like Dennis Morgan's MY WILD IRISH ROSE
or Disney's DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE:
But in my house, it's not St Pat's without THE QUIET MAN:
This ad for THE QUIET MAN emphasizes the through line which has been called "the Irish Taming of the Shrew", but I love the movie because it's not your average boy-meets-girl tale. What elevates it is that it's a love letter to Ireland, with its mostly Irish cast, Irish soundtrack, and stunning Irish locations:
It's also a very special film to me because it's a family project. John Ford cast his brother Francis Ford:
....Barry Fitzgerald appears with his brother Arthur Shields:
.....even Maureen O'Hara's two brothers show up in the film: Charles B. Fitzsimmons as Hugh Forbes and James O'Hara as Father Paul.
......all of this makes THE QUIET MAN the perfect St. Patrick's Day movie!
What Irish movies do you guys love?
HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY!!!!

Happy St. Patrick's Day.
I hadn't really thought of THE QUIET MAN as being a family film before (with all the real-life siblings on camera). Very interesting.
Another fun one to watch is THE LUCK OF THE IRISH (1947) with Tyrone Power, Cecil Kellaway and Anne Baxter. Kellaway was Oscar nominated for his role as a leprechaun.

There are two different musicals that could be considered companion films: SWEET ROSIE O’GRADY and THE DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O’GRADY

Some Irish influenced movies you may not have though of include —
GOING MY WAY — it stars Irish born Barry Fitzgerald, Irish-American Bing Crosby sings an Irish lullaby, and Barry’s Irish mom comes from Ireland at the end of the movie
THE FUGITIVE — Harrison Ford comes to Chicago on St Patrick’s Day, infiltrates a St Patty’s parade, and the cops quip about the river being dyed green
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER — The Titanic was built in Belfast by Irish workmen, the steerage section was loaded with Irish immigrants, and many members of the crew are Irish as well
YANKEE DOODLE DANDY — Normally for the 4th of July, it’s a biopic of a proud Irish-American family in which the father is proud his son is “cryin’ with a brogue.” Think of the song in the Irish costume, “Larry O’Leary is me name, by trade I am a dancing master…”

My wife and I usually watch a bunch of Irish-related movies around this time of year.
Just watched THE LUCK OF THE IRISH last night — great cast! — followed by TOP O’ THE MORNING. Next up are the two John Ford pictures, THE QUIET MAN and RISING OF THE MOON.
Earlier we watched THREE CHEERS FOR THE IRISH (Thomas Mitchell, Priscilla Lane, Dennis Morgan) and THE IRISH IN US (real-life pals James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, and Frank McHugh as brothers, with Mary Gordon as their devoted mom). Both are very funny comedies set in New York.
Neither my wife nor I have any Irish in our background, but we sure do enjoy the green-tinged movies nonetheless. (THE LUCK OF THE IRISH is literally green-tinged in its scenes set in Ireland.)

All of these movies are great additions to a St Pat’s Movie Marathon. I haven’t seen a few of these and will check them out. Hope everyone enjoyed St Patrick’s Day and had corned beef and cabbage like me. ☘️

Another film worth mentioning is John Ford's THE PLOUGH AND THE STARS (1936) starring Barbara Stanwyck & Preston Foster, with Barry Fitzgerald and Una O'Connor as part of the supporting cast.
It may be streamed on the Criterion Channel.
