Hint 2: Inhabitants & visitors promise to not engage in political activities, and yet spies abound. They are in the streets, nightclubs, shops and offices.

Hint 3: A shop owner returns from a business trip to France. Given the current climate, staff are snapping at each other, one German, one French. The business owner appears to be British, or perhaps German?

Hint 5: We are off to a grand supper club where dancers move about the dance floor to the strains of Oh You Beautiful Doll. A kissing party trick leads our shop owner to meet an intriguing German who is a spy? a war veteran? a deserter? We can't be certain. The intrigue is mutual. He visits the shop the next day in hot pursuit.

Hint 6: The intriguing German is a gallant Baron who now visits the shop daily to try to win the affections of the owner. During one visit a fresh batch of dresses arrive from Paris. The owner says they are for one of her best customers, a Countess. Her shop handyman drives her there right away. Once inside the beads on the hem of the dresses are decoded by German intelligence and provide the probable date, location & strategy of the allied counter-offensive.

Hint 7: Something has gone wrong. The shop owner's trusted assistant and co-conspirator is found murdered. She is taken to police headquarters for grilling but only tells officials he was her most faithful and devoted servant, and friend.
More trouble - her German contacts inform her the latest intelligence she provided was flawed and proved fatal for their armies. She is ordered to return to Paris to investigate her contacts. She is tailed by a number of spies.
Upon arrival she is presented with the French Médaille Militaire, the highest award that France can give a soldier. She begs to not return to Stockholm. Three years of being a double agent have taken their toll and the recent death of female agent K125 by firing squad has rattled her confidence.

Hint 8: Madeleine returns with instructions to uncover the Head of Section 8 of the German Intelligence. Her instincts tell her it is the Baron. She attempts a bluff but it is no good. He knows she is not Swiss, but French. Her cover is blown. She is doomed, or is she?

Hint 9: Madeleine begs the Baron to run away with her but duty supersedes love. He plans her capture and return to Germany. She turns to MI6 for help. They have her arrested for spying in the middle of a madcap dress sale. She is thankfully deported. The Baron heads out to sea on a submarine in pursuit.

Hint 10: The Baron, aka Captain Von Marwitz, stops the escaping boat illegally in neutral waters and takes Madeleine prisoner. As their dingy heads towards the German submarine and her certain death, a Q-ship appears and saves the day.
THE END.
