To answer you kims - yes they did see each other while filming. I'm pretty sure it was in the book DEAN MARTIN RECOLLECTIONS by Bernard H. Thorpe and Elliot Thorpe that I read they were often together on locations (I've read and researched so many books sometime it's hard for me to remember). As a matter of fact Dean sighted when he watched Brando film one of the last scenes that appears in the film and how it was filmed over and over again because the director wanted Brando to land a certain way at the bottom of the hill. Don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the film. Yes, one of Dean's major performances! Enjoy!

I know this month is the 100th Anniversary of MGM Studios. Originally I thought they would have like a whole month of just MGM movies like they did last year with a whole month of Warner Brothers movies. I do realize this month also marked the 100th birthday of Marlon Brando and the 30th Anniversary of the TCM Channel so I guess they didn't want to just do MGM movies all month. I would think they would have had enough movies in the MGM library to show movies from that studio for an extra day each week though.

Continuing praise for THE YOUNG LIONS: I love people who can write well and screenwriter Edward Anhalt is a perfect example in the scene of Ackerman meeting Hope's father to ask for Hope's hand in marriage. A short scene, few words but conveying so much. Vaughn Taylor plays Hope's father and deserves a shout out for his performance in this tightly packed scene. I'll paraphrase his statements to Ackerman-a man goes along thinking a certain way all his life, then someone comes along and makes you look inside yourself. I don't like you for it. In a couple of lines you know this man has believed all men are created equal, now meeting a Jew he faces prejudices that he may have without giving them a thought before.
Again, I love writers who can give a character sketch in a few sentences. Many screenwriters today seem compelled to write a missive about our morals.
In the words of Rick (did he actually say that?) I'm playing THE YOUNG LIONS again.

I agree kims - to me there are so many well done scenes and lines in THE YOUNG LIONS! One of my favorite is when Dean and Monties' characters are in the office of the concentration camp toward the end of the film, and they're listening to the exchange between their commander and the German townsman - the look on their faces while that conversation is taking place is worth a thousand words (great acting, great writing and great directing)!!! Also the scene that follows and the conversation that Dean and Montie have while walking along that forested path is so excellent. A great film! It's on the TCM library only until the end of April.

I recorded The Young Ones from TCM's recent showing. I haven't seen it in years but I remember it in color. Has this ever happened to anyone else, remembering a film in color but it's really B&W? Weird. Maybe it was Brando's bleach blond 'do that threw me. Anyway, I enjoyed it and yes, Dean Martin more than holds his own against Brando and Clift. Has TCM ever had a Dean Martin month? In Ben's intro he mentions that The Young Ones is on Akira Kurosawa's list of 100 favorite movies. (It comes in at #41) Here's the complete list from IMDB, if anyone is curious: www.imdb.com/list/ls056002232/

** The Young Lions not The Young Ones, 1980's British sitcom.

Thanks for Kurosawa's list. When TCM does an intro for MAGNIFICENT SEVEN the host always mentions that Kurosawa liked Sturges' remake so well that he sent Sturges a Samurai sword. Interesting that MAG 7 is not on Kurosawa's list.

Quest - I have never seen a colorized version of THE YOUNG LIONS. I own every one of Dean's films on DVD (the original versions), so have only seen the black and white film and to my knowledge TCM has only shown the black and white movie. Also, in answer to your question if Dean Martin has ever been the Star Of The Month - the answer is yes. He was SOTM September of 2018. If you'd like to visit my thread called DEAN MARTIN, I share all kinds of information about Dean. I have researched and adored Dean Martin for literally decades and love sharing what I've learned with others and will try to answer and discuss whatever you might want to know about Dean. He was an amazing talent!!! Just click on the thread CLASSIC FILM and you'll find my thread there. Looking forward to discussing more about Dean with you!

Interesting that MAG 7 is not on Kurosawa's list. Good catch. I guess he didn't want to put anything too self reverential. The list is in chronological order, not by his preference which would have been more interesting. Some movies I was surprised to see on his list: The Thin Man, Stella Dallas, Daddy Long Legs, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Annie Hall.

View AttachmentThanks for the info, Christine! I'll click over to your DM thread, looking forward to reading it. I'm not a Martin expert but watched the Martin & Lewis movies as a kid. Always preferred Martin over Jerry's antics. Martin has made some interesting movies, many times playing a certain Martin type like Bama in Some Came Running. Re: The Young Lions, I think it had been so long since I had seen it, I just mistakenly thought it was in color. I'm getting old, I guess!
