Someone got in trouble over a joke on an award show-remember Chris and Will? And some comedian has said he'll never host the Oscars again.
Times have changed, why not the award shows? Why do we need comedians to host? Why do we need spectacular music interludes? Oscar runs too long and too boring to sit through over 3 hrs. And why not decorum to match the so called prestige of the awards? Why not have the president of the Academy host and get on with the awards with minimal cutesiness?

I agree...it wouldn't hurt for them to change it up a bit...and veer away from the stale format.

The 3 hours is for the allowance of as many commercials as possible. Commercials are the most important consideration to the broadcaster.
That's why it doesn't change. Gotta keep it long.
When people stop watching completely, that's when they might reconsider the format.
As for the comedians hosting, that's often the only reason to watch this industry clusterfuck.

I don't know why you use vulgar words, but that's your way of expression?
Nope, I don't watch in its entirety. I change channels for 3-4 minutes during the extravaganza musical numbers and sometimes at other moments because I want them to get on with the awards. I sometimes got to bed and what till morning to look up who won.

Do most people even remember who won? Sometimes they remember the musical numbers more!
I remember one time I was on a train trip, and the train was delayed outside Salt Lake City. An attendant came over the intercom and hosted an impromptu movie trivia game to keep us all occupied. There was a question that went like this: "who won the Oscar for Best Actress and Best Actor in 1987?" Of course I knew it was Cher and Michael Douglas...but nobody else on the train was able to answer that question...this was in the summer of 1988, before everyone had cell phones, so they couldn't quickly go online to look up the answer. That Oscar telecast had only occurred a year earlier!

There are lots of reasons people watch the awards. I'm interested in which film won what award. I don't go to films first run. I let the Oscar winners determine what I watch. If the winners are not still first run, they usually make a rerelease in my area. I can understand comedians leery of hosting-people take offense easier than in years past. As for the musical numbers, they have become a show of their own-appealing to many, maybe most. I find they delay the program.

Most of the winners are chosen for political reasons. I may agree or disagree with those politics. I like to discover things for myself. Most of time I will watch something and say to myself, why wasn't that particular performance nominated? Then I realize the performance flew under the radar, because the actor was probably not an activist of some kind.

My pals and I are oldies, as in we still buy newspapers and go online as a last resort-gosh we go to the library for hard cover books-gasp. and while we have Kindles we sit around with paperbacks and hardcover books pointing out our favorite parts. My point is there are so many films made that we miss because the newspaper covers theatrical films mostly. We enjoy debating if we think a film should have won the award given. Probably we don't remember who won what after June.

I watch the Oscars to see the REMEMBRANCE TRIBUTE (even though I think TCM had a magnificent tribute for 2023), and to try to keep up on the new things going on. To tell the truth I see very few if any new films. I'm just not interested in all the computer stuff - the bigger and better that the movies try to be now.
Old Hollywood - it was all done by hand. Even though it was make believe it was more real to me!

I haven't seen Oppenheimer but my money's on Cillian Murphy for Best Actor. I think he has a compelling presence on screen.
I did see Nyad, and Jodie Foster and Annette Bening were both really good, but I would pick Emma Stone for the win.
