"If you don't take me out, someone else will."
The only answer to that is, "then go with somebody else."

Outside of our story...
I love that spies abound - besides being a medical student, Maugham worked for the British Secret Service in WWI.

He's "a gentleman in every sense of the word." She loves those phrases she thinks are high class.

I forgot about the scene where Alan Hale, effectively, tells Howard to man up if he wants Mildred.
It's a pretty funny move. It could be genuine or a great mind game.

Poor devil. He tried manning up and it didn't work.

Per wiki, the title comes from:
Spinoza. Part IV of his Ethics is titled "Of Human Bondage, or the Strength of the Emotions" (Latin: De servitute humana seu de affectuum viribus). A free person, says Spinoza, is able to think rationally: but when one is dominated by emotion, rational thought is impossible, and one becomes a slave to the (unthinking) passions.

My favorite fun Kay Johnson moment (from "Madam Satan").

I love the special effects to his medical text. Reminds me a bit of Princess Leia's hologram.

I love the special effects to his medical text. Reminds me a bit of Princess Leia's hologram. Good call. It's also from Hugo's novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" where Esmeralda appears in the priest's mind when he's reading a book.

My favorite fun Kay Johnson moment (from "Madam Satan"). Mildred 's outfits here are absolutely perfectly horrible. Even with that lovely ruffle skirt they added a slumpy top. No cracks for any tender feelings to creep in about her.
