Notice how much larger the letters are for Howard's name than the other actors, and he's the only person above the title.

There's an actor named Phil Carey...interesting that this is also the name of the main character for this story by Maugham.

Most of the audience doesn't really care I don't think!?

LOVE the frankness about his artistic talents.
Doesn't seem cruel somehow.

So I wondered why Maugham included mention of a club foot in this story.
Here is what critic John Sutherland said:
The hero, Philip Carey, suffers the same childhood misfortunes as Maugham himself: the loss of his mother, the breakup of his family home, and his emotionally straitened upbringing by elderly relatives. In addition, Carey has a club foot, a disability which commentators equate with either Maugham's stammer or his homosexuality.

First glimpse of the marvelous Mildred:
But she turned out to be ill-natured and contemptible.

Initially Leslie Howard wasn't pleased with the casting of Mildred, before he was won over by Davis' talent. I wonder who he originally wanted in the role...
My pick would have been Ida Lupino, who was British...but she had just come to Hollywood and didn't have enough box office clout yet in America.

Alan Hale could play just about any role. He had to be one of the hardest working actors on Warner's lot.

I think a psychiatrist might have a theory about the club foot. Maybe it's to explain Philip's low self-esteem (if that's what it is) that attracts him to a woman who treats him like dirt.

But she turned out to be ill-natured and contemptible. She barely smiled at all before turning. Maybe 2 seconds.
