I can't say enough good things about "84 Charing Cross Road," the book or the movie.

It's been ages since I've seen the film, never read the book. Have you written reviews for either one of them?

Amadeus was mentioned so I thought I'd add another biographical melodrama about a musical star. In MGM's Interrupted Melody (1955) Eleanor Parker played an Australian opera singer whose career was cut short by polio. A big part of the movie is her struggle to overcome depression and finally manage to return to the stage, with the help of her husband, Glenn Ford. I believe Eleanor called it her favorite role.

In the same vein, Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in With a Song in My Heart (1952). The singer lost the use of a leg in a U.S.O. plane crash during WWII, but instead of it ending her career she persevered and was able to resume performing with the help of leg braces and a wheelchair. Both she and Eleanor Parker were Oscar-nominated for these roles.
