...with accompaniment from Kenny Burrell: ...and Wes Montgomery, jamesjazzguitar: I was at the one of the last performances Jimmy Smith did in Los Angeles in December of 2004. The guitar player was Larry Coryell which was a surprise. I talked to Larry that night and he was called at the last minute. The show started with guitar, bass and drums. Then Jimmy joined. He had to be carried onto the stage and placed in the Organ's seat. Played only a few songs and then was taken off stage and the music continued with the trio. Jimmy passed less than 3 months after this show.

Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me" (1972), which was on its way to number 5 on the US Top 40 charts fifty years ago this week, was, according to its creator, musically inspired by "...an eight bar intro that Jimmy Smith played on a recording of When Johnny Comes Marching Home. He had this whole sort of block chord thing that he did to set up the intro of the song." ...and for comparison:
