I enjoy Death in Paradise, although I’ve missed the previous actors when they’ve departed —not that I blame them for wanting to get back to Britain and their friends and families. Fortunately, the producers have done a reasonably good job of finding replacements. But I do think this most recent changeover, where the detective sergeant and the uniformed officers were replaced, was a bit more awkward. I don’t think that’s been the fault of the new actors; it’s more that the writers didn’t integrate the new characters as smoothly, which was probably due to having three new characters introduced within a short time. Actually, the last inspector had a really touching story arc and very emotional ending. And a few have returned for cameos.
It seems they have made spinoffs based on characters who have returned back to England. Although, they aren't showing in America yet.
I agree — the Death in Paradise producers handled the story and departure of the most recent inspector very well. My wife and I just watched the DVDs of the latest season and were sorry to see the inspector go. For the life of me, I can’t remember his name, even though we finished watching that season just a month ago.
I thought the introduction of the other new officers, however, was a little awkward. For example, they didn’t seem to know what to do with the older woman who originally joined the team as a civilian; once they had her go into training as an officer, which they should have done to begin with, her character seemed to have a more understandable purpose.
We’re looking forward to the spin-off, Beyond Paradise, with inspector Humphrey. He was my favorite of the four inspectors they’ve had on Death in Paradise so far

Speaking of original cast members leaving for greener pastures, the excellent British cop series New Tricks saw almost the entire core cast leave gradually. In case you’ve never seen it, the show is about a team of three retired London police detectives, supervised by a younger active-duty female detective, who form a new squad to re-investigate unsolved/open cases. During its 15 seasons, all four of the actors playing these main characters left the show, to be replaced one-by-one by new actors playing different but analogous characters. Fortunately, the producers found very good actors as replacements, and the show maintained its high quality to the end of its run.
I'm only into season four of New Tricks, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the cast changes as it goes along. So far, one "cast" change they made that really rubbed me the wrong way had to do with Brian's dog. After Scruffy went to that big dog park in the sky, Gerry gave Brian a new dog named Scampi. It was a terrier. An episode or two later, Scampi had magically turned into a spaniel! I was so agitated by this that I had to start the episode over again -- twice -- because I couldn't pay attention to the story for being upset over this breed-shifting dog.
I've read that the original Scampi took another role, so Alun Armstrong who plays Brian brought in his own dog, the spaniel. That's a nice bit of color, but it still bugs me. Instead of the "two Darren's", I now refer to the "two Scampis".
