I still find it sad that "they" didn't think the message board community was important enough to them. We are part of film preservation just by discussing the films; it keeps them circulating and therefore collects new viewers and fans.

I still find it sad that "they" didn't think the message board community was important enough to them. We are part of film preservation just by discussing the films; it keeps them circulating and therefore collects new viewers and fans. Well to be fair, it was a very small community. I'm a member of a jazz guitar forum and there over 500 active members, and many first rate, and well known, jazz guitar players that participate (well known to use jazz guitar players anyway). Around 50 active members at any one time. I commented about this at the TCM forum many years ago: That I was surprised that there were so few participants at the TCM forum given that "classic" movies must have a much higher following than jazz guitar. Of course, we always wondered why TCM didn't have the host (e.g. Robert and Ben back in the day) promote the site. Maybe then it would have gained a wider following. When I chatted with Ben, (when I ran into him at the Atlanta Airport when I was traveling for work, and Ben was coming back from the TCM cruise), I mentioned the website and how we used it and wished he and others at TCM would be active participants, and promote it. Oh, well, at least we have Paris! (and this forum, thanks to Top Billed).

I don't think they quite knew what to do with it to maximize it's potential. What was that deal where people who live in the same town could get together ? But, come up with $70! That other thing where you could post pictures and things about your favorite star. Novel concepts but, too expensive and/or confusing and complicated.
They had a captive audience there. They could have done more surveys, sold more wine and cheese , the possibilities were endless. If they had some imagination. In this world of social media, they had their own right there ready to be utilized in some way. I think it was just a matter of bean counters in charge and the creative people not being heard or asked for ideas.
