Since podcasts are a form of audio streaming, I thought I would add a thread here for discussing classic movie-related podcasts. I recently discovered a podcast called Lions, Towers & Shields which is a good fit for classic film fans. Each episode of the series has a host and 2 other guests who spend around 60 minutes discussing a single film primarily from the Hollywood studio era of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. (I believe the title of the podcast refers to the logos for MGM, RKO, and Warner Bros.) A new episode comes out about every two weeks or so, and also includes a few news items on current DVD and Blu-Ray releases and films coming up on TCM, for example. The series started in February of 2020 and there are currently 63 episodes total. A list of some of the featured topics includes: 1. The Set-Up (1949) 2. Holiday (1938) 3. Baby Face (1933) … 61. Raw Deal (1948), and a tribute to Marsha Hunt 62. Dead of Night (1945) 63. Keeper of the Flame (1942) The films are discussed in great detail, so it is probably best to watch the chosen film before listening to the episode. You can find more information on the series at:

Films to Be Buried With hosted by Brett Goldstein. I just discovered this podcast hosted by Ted Lasso actor/writer Brett Goldstein. Each episode he interviews a person about different films throughout his/her life. He has standard questions like : What was the first movie you remember seeing? What movie have you seen the most # of times? What's a movie you found sexy? What is a movie you like that most others don't? What's the best movie of all time but not necessarily your personal favorite? It's an interesting twist on interviewing people. Goldstein seems to have a good knowledge of movie history from the few episodes I've heard. One huge drawback, for me, is that most of the 100 plus guests are British folk I've never heard of. I listened to Russell T. Davies (Doctor Who writer) and Jim Gaffagan (one of the few Americans.) podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/films-to-be-buried-with-with-brett-goldstein/id1408585620

podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/talking-pictures/id1722148571"From TCM and MAX, this is Talking Pictures: A Movie Memories Podcast, hosted by Ben Mankiewicz. We all remember the first movie to really scare us, or the movie a parent loved and watched repeatedly. We know which movies changed us, inspiring a move or a new career path. Mankiewicz, the Turner Classic Movies host, collects these moviegoing memories from Hollywood’s most interesting writers, actors, and directors in Talking Pictures. Listen in as movie-lovers swap stories, jokes, surprising moments, and endless movie recommendations; then watch some of those very same films on the streaming service MAX. For the cinephile or the casual movie lover, this is a conversation about all the life that happens because of watching movies" Guests will include Mel Brooks and Nancy Meyers. Is there anyone in Lee you'd like to hear Ben interview for this podcast?

The first episode of Ben's podcast Talking Pictures premiers today. His first guest is writer-director Nancy Meyer. Solid episode, much of the discussion is about her movies. They also cover Billy Wilder who gave her notes on her script for Baby Boom. Nancy Meyer's does not like the reference to the look of her movies as the Nancy Meyer's Aesthetic. Don't bring up spacious white kitchens or white turtle necks! Then Ben asks a series of questions that he will ask each guest: Most memorable movie going experience, Which movie have you watched the most, What movie would you show someone you were interested in dating, A movie you loved in high school, A movie that you feel you have to defend, A movie that you'd recommend to others, What movie always make you cry, A favorite movie of your mom or dad. One person on reddit wondered if the guests will be constrained by what is available on TCM/Max. That seems rather cynical. What, are they going to give the guests a list of movies they can choose from? www.iheart.com/podcast/269-talking-pictures-136708645/

This week on Talking Pictures: Steven Soderbergh.
Ben is clearly a fan of Soderbergh. Ben talks about Out of Sight as being a seminal movie going experience. He says he watches Out of Sight twice a year. ( He also watches another George Clooney movie, Michael Collins, twice a year.)
Much of the episode is devoted to Soderbergh's career. They also discuss Michael Curtiz, Jaws, Hal Ashby, among other things. The director also answers the list of questions that Ben will pose to the different guests each week.

This week on Talking Pictures Ben interviews Emerald Fennell. Who?? You might ask. She's the writer-director of Saltburn and Promising Young Woman. I haven't seen Saltburn but have read about it. (Scenes with bathwater and later at a gravesite don't make me want to devote two + hours to it.) I did make it through A Promising Young Woman, a tiresome preachy slog. So ... I'm not terribly interested in this one.
Anyone listen to any of Talking Pictures yet? Anyone you'd like to hear Ben interview?

Ben talks to writer director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land). Ben credits Chazelle's appearance on TCM to helping him change how he sees musicals. The director selected the musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as part of a night of programming. Ben says he's "still not there" with musicals. Ben's complaint with musicals is they are boring, why are they singing and how can I believe anything that happens after this, after they break into song. (This starts at about 28:15) I'm always puzzled by this take on musicals. People can watch superhero movies, movies about galaxies far far away but musicals ... you can't get your head around. www.iheart.com/podcast/269-talking-pictures-136708645/episode/damien-chazelle-154488254/

Director John Ford Is Focus of Next TCM ‘Plot Thickens’ Podcast. Hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, the seven-episode season examines the Hollywood legend, a man “defined by contradictions.” "“Decoding John Ford,” hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, premieres June 6. The fifth season of the podcast, consisting of seven episodes, will feature never-before-heard archival interviews with the likes of John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Woody Strode and Ford himself. TCM says Mankiewicz will “strip back the mythology to reveal Ford’s brilliance — alongside the often ugly, uncomfortable truths about his life and movies, asking whether we can ever truly separate art from the artist. To set up “Decoding John Ford,” TCM will air four of the director’s films, co-hosted by his grandson Dan Ford, on June 5. A 24-hour marathon of World War II-inspired movies will follow the next day. June 6, podcast premiere day, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day." www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/john-ford-tcm-plot-thickens-podcast-1235875654/

podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bonus-episode-mario-cantone/id1722148571?i=1000653658434Bonus episode of Talking Pictures recorded live at The TCM Film Fest. Ben talks to actor/comedian Mario Cantone. TCM viewers will recognize Cantone from the fright movie series he co-hosts with Ben each October. As you might expect, there are lots of impersonations, Cantone also talks about his career and his love for old movies. Ben says he prefers the Fredric March version of A Star is Born, Mario prefers James Mason in the Norman Maine role. I prefer Mason, too. Is anyone listening to the Talking Pictures podcast? Is there anyone you'd like Ben to interview? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone?

I've listened to several of the Talking Pictures episodes and the teaser for the John Ford season of The Plot Thickens. I especially enjoyed the Mel Brooks episode of Talking Pictures, since it's wonderful that Mr. Brooks is still with us and sharp as ever. I also learned that Mr. Brooks and Ben have been friends for quite some time, which is a nice surprise.
Recently I finished the One Handshake Away podcast started by Peter Bogdanovich before his passing, which was then completed by Louise Stratten and Guillermo Del Toro. Another really fine series, I was wishing for more after listening to the 8 episodes.
TCM is promoting the One Handshake Away podcast again on the evening of Sunday, May 5, with a Raoul Walsh double feature (Raoul Walsh is discussed in episode 7.) One Handshake Away also has a John Ford episode, so this seems to be the year to remember and discuss John Ford.

I'm glad to hear someone else is listening to Talking Pictures. Some episodes are better than others. I'm glad Ben's doing it but I'd like to hear more from people who have a connection to classic or older movies, like the Mel Brooks episode.
Thanks for mentioning One Handshake Away. I hadn't heard about it. Looks interesting. Tarantino/Don Siegel episode stood out as a fitting and intriguing combo.
I listened to the Bogdanovch season of TCM's The Plot Thickens. It was my favorite season of the series. About the same time, You Must Remember This podcast was doing a series on Polly Platt, Bogdanovich's first wife who also worked on his movies. It was an interesting juxtaposition to hear the two sides of that marriage and professional collaboration.
