Fifty-five years ago on this day, the Beatles are said to have released the epic "White Album":

Many fans feel it would have been better to split it into 2 separate releases.
I, myself, kind of feel that way.
But it is what it is - and there are some excellent tracks on each of the 4 sides.

If two separate albums, I don't think one of them would have Revolution #9. (and maybe a few other filler songs). I.e. They would have had to add more substantial songs (which they did have laying around like The One After 909 that ended up on Let It Be as a throw in).

As an overall work, it feels a little scattershot to me. Of all their albums, it comes across as less focused than the others.

Got into my father's Beatle albums when I was about turning eleven... The much-maligned drumming of Ringo Starr takes some skin strike-backs within the "White Album" which include some nice fill like work from Starr, suggesting he was a better drummer than many give him credit...
One example echoes eleven-year-old nostalgia for me:

I absolutely take Ringo's playing for granted, but what would you expect from someone who has seen The Pete Best Band?
Speaking of the double your pleasure principle, there are non-stop tv adverts on presently for the Red & Blue albums, both near and dear to my heart. I am of course FAR too young to have bought the white one out of the hopper but April 2, 1973 was a big deal. It took quite a bit of saving to get my $9.99 per album but I did it and then played them non-stop on repeat. . I'll take this song any way I can get it, red white or blue Perhaps my favorite Beatle song. The Beatles - Revolution

Soft fans bought the red and blue albums.
Fans like myself had no use for them. I already had every Beatles album on CD. Including Past Masters 1 and 2.
I think Ringo's drumming was very professional - and sometimes exceptional, such as on the track 'Rain'.

Past Masters 1 and 2 were useful for the singles that didn't make it to the Beatles albums on CD. As for Ringo: professional and most of all tasteful. His fills and just overall drumming really fit the music. I often play Rain and Paperback Rider, both recorded using the Motown recording technique, which enhanced Paul's bass and Ringo's bass drum. I play them LOUD on my still working JBL speakers.
