Old Friends, an impeccable tribute to Stephen Sondheim, is at the Gielgud Theatre in London, starring Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, and a cast of great UK actors with a connection to Sondheim or his work. I saw it earlier this week. Just perfect.

I guess I will play the ignoramus, but I have never gotten into Sondheim's music and for the life of me cannot understand why he's so popular.

I guess I will play the ignoramus, but I have never gotten into Sondheim's music and for the life of me cannot understand why he's so popular. I'm not the biggest Sondheim fan either, though I like his work. The first Broadway show I ever saw was A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which has a great score, although some of my favorite songs were cut for the film.
Old Friends also featured songs from shows for which he only wrote lyrics, such as Gypsy and West Side Story.

I like Sondheim's work, and the superlatives he receives seem over the top to me. I must be in the same corner as Topbilled, because my favorite work of his was the movie he wrote with Anthony Perkins: THE LAST OF SHEILA.

This will really reflect my ignorance, but the first time I became 'acquainted' with the titles of Sondheim's catalogue was when I was looking at the list of episodes for Desperate Housewives. Marc Cherry, the writer-creator of that series, used lyrics from Sondheim tunes as the titles for nearly all the show's episodes. Since I'm not a Sondheim devotee, obviously, I have no idea which lyrics/episode titles correspond to which song.
The last episode is called 'Finishing the Hat'

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Desperate_Housewives_episodes Finishing the Hat is the title of Sondheim's memoir. It may also refer to "The Ladies Who Lunch," which famously includes the line: "Does anyone still wear a hat?"
Sondheim wrote music for the film Reds, including the lovely song "Goodbye for Now."
