Both are excellent movies. You can rarely go wrong with a Robert Wise picture.

Never seen Something for the Birds: Sounds like a fun film with Victor Mature and Patricia Neal doing comedy..

The fun thing about these director spotlights is you get to see how some directors enjoyed working with the same stars, even if some of those films together were not such big hits. They would keep teaming up and collaborating.
I went on a Joseph Losey binge last weekend and it was interesting to see how he had directed a film starring Jeanne Moreau in 1962. The film, EVA, was not really a big hit and Losey complained that the producers wrecked it in the editing stages. He and Moreau, maybe hurting from that experience, would not work together again until 1976. And then she did another film with him in the 80s right before Losey died.
So like I said, I think if the director and star are fond of each other and appreciate each other's talents, and the timing is right, they usually try to work together again.

It's like Christmas has come early...LOL
I re-watched the film today and loved it. You're right that the film stays balanced and doesn't get too syrupy sweet or too edgy.

"Blood on the Moon" is a top-five Western for me, in part because it's film noir done out West.
Oh, and in part because I don't think Barbara Bel Geddes ever looked cuter than she did in this one.

Blood on the Moon is also one of my top 5 westerns, but that would be despite Bel Geddes. She doesn't pull off that tough-gal persona IMO.
