I don't blame Pat for not wanting to meet Mary. If she knows she's the consolation wife - I think she does - then it is very, very hard for her to meet Mary.

So she never knew why she couldn't marry him? That's a bit odd.

I'll be honest. I am not particularly enamored with all this jumping around with her memories. I wish we'd get some longer more linear sequences. It feels like Lean and his writers are trying too hard to make this an 'art film.'

My memory (it's been years) from the book is money - she didn't want to live the modest life of a university professor.

Ah, separate beds. I'd have bet on separate bedrooms. Her husband must have agreed to no clutching and gripping.

PETULIA (1968), a Julie Christie film, also employs this device...but in PETULIA, the character is having seizures/breakdowns...so it makes sense that her memories would be disjointed and that there was a lack of linear logic.
In THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS, there is no real reason for them to keep cutting to different memories, except to make the film seem more importantly romantic, which doesn't quite work for me.

I love this scene when she comes to see him in his apartment. You can feel how comfortable they are with each other. Great acting.

I had to put on CC to hear exactly what she said to him as her reason for not marrying. "Why can't there be love without all this clutching and gripping."

I can't believe Lean and his cinematographer are shooting Trevor Howard from his bad side in some shots...the images with the actor's facial markings take me out of the scene...it makes me appreciate how Claudette Colbert would insist on being shot only from the best angles/sides.
Doesn't the performer owe it to the audience to make sure they are filmed in the most flattering way possible...?
