OH,GAD! Think William Powell in LIFE WITH FATHER. I've been quasi-crippled a while and on some serious pain pills for the past week. I ordered a few items on-line I cannot get locally. Now that I'm off the hard drugs, I went to the Post Office to get my mail. While loopy, I also ordered a Hallmark Christmas collection of dvds. I'm sure I did the order, the dvds are films I like, but in my right mind would not add these to my film collection.
Now, see, this could not have happened pre-internet. Of course, pre-internet I would not be able to get the other items I ordered. This is the "good with the bad" and a lesson to me to stay off the internet while on hard drugs.

Sorry about your travails. I had back problems earlier this year so I get how it can take you out of things, especially when you add pain meds to the mix. So just blame it on the drugs and enjoy the movies! I make fun of them all the time, but over the years there have actually been a few I'm a real fan of. One I look for every year is The Mistletoe Promise, about a couple who agree to a no-strings relationship to get them through holiday obligations at work, with family, etc. As a plot it's been done and done, but that time it worked. The actors were actually for real charming and the script wasn't bananas, so a thumbs up for me.

I've watched more Hallmark Christmas movies than I care to admit and you just named one of the best ones. I was disappointed that Jamie King didn't do more Hallmark movies after that one.
There is also a somewhat similar one where a married couple, who is planning to break up, fakes that they are still happily married to make it a nice Christmas for the family. I think it came out in the past few years, but I can't remember the name or the actors in it, but it definitely was a cut above the usual Hallmark fare. By chance, do you know the one I'm talking about?

By chance, do you know the one I'm talking about? Yes, I kept waiting for Jaime King to do more too. She really stood out from the pack. Someone who stood out recently was Rachel Skarsten as a newly installed charter flight pilot whose first charter (and potential permanent gig) was forced down by weather off the Canadian coast, stranding some very demanding clients on their way to Europe. I bought every syllable that came out of her mouth, needless to say an extreme rarity for Hallmark movies. She was cast opposite Andrew Walker, who's probably the best of the guys in the Hallmark "family". I'll be looking forward to seeing her again the same way I did Jamie King, I hope with better results. I remember the other movie you're talking about but not the title. I wouldn't be surprised to see it turn up in the rotation this year, so if either of us notices, let's post it here.

I haven't seen it yet, but I recorded "Christmas Island" (this way I can fast forward through the commercials) because I liked Rachel Skarsten's performance in Hallmark's "The Royal Nanny" and I usually quit the "Royal" Hallmark movies before the first commercial break. It's funny, we both noticed her and Jamie King. It's a deal on the other movie, I'll post the title here if I see it again.

Yes! The Royal Nanny. I felt as though I'd seen her but couldn't make the connection. There's something no-nonsense about her, which obviously makes her stand out on Hallmark, where nonsense reigns supreme. The script and story for Christmas Island are more than adequate and she easily fits into the role of the capable pilot who's put to some real tests, as opposed to some of the Hallmark airheads playing Fortune 500 CEO's who couldn't look more ridiculous if they tried.

Proving how empty my life is and how I can waste time on utter nonsense, I hunted down the Hallmark movie we were thinking of, it's from 2021 and called "An Unexpected Christmas".
Also, have you ever seen "The Birthday Wish?" It's a non-Christmas Hallmark one that I also like. And there's even a small connect to classic cinema in that one as "His Girl Friday" is reference in it. Plus I love its star, Jessie Schram.

I've seen Jessie Schram but not the movie, so I'll look for that too. Once in a while some show-offy scriptwriter throws in a classic movie reference to buy some cred; Casablanca came up not too long ago. Sometimes it actually fits the conversation and sometimes you can tell the writer is fresh off Google, doing "research".

Seeing other people write about the hallmark films, I've considered that some of the films are worth watching, they aren't all fluff, though i wonder what the true meaning of Christmas is for some of their writers.
Part of the draw for me is that I don't have to worry about the young ones seeing something I don't think they should. I'm a prude, I disagree with the MPAA about acceptable scenes and language in theatrical PG and PG13 films. I do think people should watch their language before children.
CHRISTMAS ISLAND was good and I agree about Andrew Walker. Most of the male leads tend to play their parts like window dressing. Walker is believable in his roles.
I wish THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN would play again, I like it a lot.

For those interested, "An Unexpected Christmas," (the movie I Love Melvin and I have been chatting about) is on Hallmark tomorrow on the East Coast at 10am. Yes, I searched for it and no I am not proud that I did. Yes, my DVR is set and no I am not proud that I set it.

I remember vaguely a talk show discussion-don't remember the show or who the guests were who argued this: Are the best films of the year the ones which gross the most or are the best films of the year those that rate highest for art or the Academy's criteria? I remember one point argued was: how could THE SOUND OF MUSIC compare to the greatness of SEVEN SAMURAI?
My opinion: there is no one greatest film. You have to provide the criteria. I do think the films that survive most likely had the highest grosses.
What's you opinion?

Does Top Billed know about this clandestine meeting spot? (perhaps what caused him to be under the weather)
I feel like I have just found all the naughty rebellious cool kids on the secret smoking patio out back of the high school.
Here am I, minding my own business, trying to get caught up on all I have missed, harvesting the low hanging fruit like Holiday items, innocently wondering why we hopped from Hallowe'en to Xmas...
When what to my wondering eyes should appear but closet Hallmark heretics? I mean guilty pleasures, yes, of course, we all have them....but Hallmark!!!!
And so now instead of finishing It's Love I'm After, I am watching A Cozy Christmas Inn on TV. (filmed in Utah apparently but I do feel like the majority are filmed here in The Great White North to get 70 cents on the dollar...and tax incentives)
THIS IS ALL TOO FASCINATING, fun and ridiculous. I am surprised you haven't hidden your true avatar identities or used the 'post as guest' shenanigan.
What haunts me about this genre.... It takes just as much effort: To light for a good movie To do hair and make-up for a good movie To build sets for a good movie To write a script for a good movie
It seems like a bit of a waste of time to make such forgettable seemingly empty films. But I have determined there must be an audience of those who do not want to go too deep Who don't want any question marks Who want to keep it simple
And considering the number of people that are employed by such simplicity, I have come to terms with such art forms (cough)

Galacticgirl gets it! I can feel you coming over to the dark side. The Canadian locations can lead to some pretty funny situations, like "Martha's Vinyard" with a wall of pine trees and a line of mountains occasionally straying into view. My favorite was when they went out to tap maple trees in a "Vermont" movie and stuck the bucket on a redwood. Nice touch. But most of them truly are indefensible, so please keep our secret.
