While in college, the program was aired again. fortunately I knew the history of the broadcast, because a couple of girls at my dorm were freaking out. It's been a lot of years, but there is a bit of memory that there was a nationally syndicated radio show on Saturday nights with programming aimed at the young audience and they played THE WAR OF THE WORLDS that night.

I just re-listened to WAR OF THE WORLDS last week, and I never fail to be impressed with Welles’ production. It’s not just that it’s an exciting story, but more so that Welles turned the Wells story into something that sounded like a real radio broadcast, with dance music and news bulletins, as opposed to just a straight narrative.
The broadcast may be in its 85th year, but it never gets old.

The broadcast may be in its 85th year, but it never gets old. The Firesign Theater specialized in telling their stories for their LP's through the mediums of film, TV and radio, but they had very advanced recording studio technology to work with, whereas Welles was working with just the basics. Impressive and exciting, just as you said. These guys were maybe more playful but they were just as serious about what they were doing and also managed to blur some lines between fantasy and reality for a new generation.

Woody Allen made use of the broadcast in a hilarious scene from Radio Days.
