What's interesting about this classic duo is that the three films they made together (which were all enormous hits) were done at different studios. Both were contract players at MGM in the 1940s, which explains their initial pairing in the sports biopic THE STRATTON STORY. Five years later, James Stewart was freelancing, but June Allyson was still under contract at MGM. However, she obtained a loan out to Universal for the musical biopic THE GLENN MILLER STORY, and then another loan out to Paramount for the aviation drama STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND.
Stories tended to focus more on James Stewart's character, but June Allyson nicely complements him and more than holds her own in the supporting wife role.
