I saw a GIF from IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE...but of course, TCM has never broadcast that film and it seems unlikely they ever will.

Separately, it seems TCM chose not to show several of his big movies for his SOTS day today. I believe NBC/Universal has a long-term contract for the exclusive broadcast rights to IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, so it can air the film every December on NBC. This has been the case since before TCM began operating in 1994.
I've never understood why NBC/Universal can't allow TCM to broadcast the film during another part of the year...like TCM could do a special Christmas in July theme and show it then.
A quick check on Amazon...indicates the black and white version of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE can be streamed for $3.99 (to rent) or $9.99 (to buy). Sometimes the colorized version is available for streaming. Also there is a Blu-Ray version of the DVD for sale. It's probably a film I should purchase, just to have.

I knew "It's a Wonderful Life" had been taken out of the public domain many years ago, but I didn't think it went all the way back to pre-1994. I would have sworn it was still showing up on every TV channel during the Christmas season well into the 1990s.

They may even start showing it in late November, right after Thanksgiving. That may be why it seems like it airs a lot, but it only airs on NBC, nowhere else.

Maybe, I don't know as I almost never watch network TV anymore.
I was referring to the era, which must have been in the 1980s, when you could flip through your seventy-five or so cable channels anytime of day or night in November and December and always see "It's a Wonderful Life" playing on a handful of them. It was crazy how many channels showed that movie during the Christmas season back then when it was still in the public domain.

It was crazy how many channels showed that movie during the Christmas season back then when it was still in the public domain. That's right, it was in the public domain during that time. But something changed, because even in its first year on the air (1994-1995) TCM didn't broadcast it...and I don't see them not airing it in December 1994, unless they were prohibited from doing so.
I wonder how many years NBC/Universal has a lock on the broadcast rights...and how much that costs them to keep renewing those exclusive rights.

Another beloved family classic that TCM has never shown is THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Again, I think it's because the broadcast rights are exclusive to network television...and I'd imagine it would cost TCM too much to outbid the commercial networks.
TCM did show the film during one of its film festivals, and I am sure that wasn't cheap...but probably substantially less than if they'd gotten the rights to broadcast it on the channel.
