I was nine when that came out and was there as soon as it came to the cheap weekend matinee theater I could afford. I remember being very disappointed in the "Sensurround" effect. It was an early lesson in marketing BS. Though I'm about three years older than you, Fading Fast, I'm not ashamed to type that I was scared. Maybe a superior sound system might have altered your experience: Not unlike the WHO's once-notorious PAs, there was a warning about getting too close to the auditorium horns and speakers at the CHINESE theater... Jane Fonda is seen near the 1969 Isle of Wight stage where, if I recall reading, there were warnings to keep at least 15' away from the WHO's sound system:  |

I saw Earthquake when it came out at the Southgate theater(in Southgate, Michigan....hence the name...  ) All "Sensurround" seemed to be was six subwoofers(three one each side of the theater seating) that to me sounded as if the paper diaphragms needed serious refoaming. It was laughable. I was 23 at the time. Sepiatone |

It could very well be because I went to a cheap theater - I think it was a $2 matinee special. My mom would give me, I think, $3 for the ticket and snacks and I'd spend the afternoon at this depressing strip mall theater, which, probably didn't install the Sensurround right or didn't rent all the equipments.

Add me to the list of left ear-challenged individuals!( Hey- George Bailey had a bad left ear.  ) Mine was aquired while working at Der Wienerschnitzel. A hood fan over the grills got pushed in and a great big Boom occured, permanently bending the large metal fan and damaging my eardrum. I can hear fine in the ear, but the clarity is horrible; sounds like those adults speaking in the PEANUTS cartoons!

A friend of mine saw MIDWAY at the same theater I saw EARTHQUAKE and told me the effect worked better there for that movie. MIDWAY too, if you recall, was another of the "Sensurround" movies out that year.
