Warner Bros. did well with its relatively small number of pictures as there are several enjoyable movies in its releases this year.

Where, oh where is This Earth is Mine, Universal's saga of a wine-growing family which in some ways could be considered the prototype for those 1980's prime time TV series, Falcon Crest in particular? It had a really good cast (Rock Hudson, Jean Simmons, Dorothy McGuire and Claude Raines) and beautiful Napa Valley locations. There were two soapy melodramas which have stood the test of time: Universal's Imitation of Life and Warner's A Summer Place. And two comedies in particular, Pillow Talk and Operation Petticoat, were both massive hits. At this point in my life I'd zero in on Some Like it Hot and North by Northwest as being standouts, but back then I would definitely have picked Journey to the Center of the Earth as my favorite of the year. I really liked Frank Capra's A Hole in the Head then and I like it still. And my favorite musical, Li'l Abner, is from this year. I've only seen Porgy and Bess once when a Boston TV movie host negotiated a showing with the family; it fell prey to some criticism at the time of it release but I liked it.

Journey to the Center of the Earth was my favorite film as a kid, and it's still on my ten best list. I could watch it again and again -- and do. It had such an impression on me that the first time I went to Europe, I flew to Edinburgh. I walked the streets below Edinburgh Castle that Professor Lindenbrook (James Mason) walked. I stayed in the residence halls of the university. One of the great things about the film is that it takes its time building character, it doesn't just fling everyone into the action. It's brilliant storytelling in cinematic terms.
Li'l Abner is one of my favorite screen musicals. Great score, a joyous film, with a great cast. I love the way we meet the characters in the opening number: "It's a Typical Day, in Dogpatch, U.S.A." I saw a revival of the show at Encores/NY City Center in 1998. Julie Newmar reprised her role of Stupefyin' Jones, at the age of 66! (She'll be 90 in August, perhaps she can do it again.)
Other films I went to as a kid in 1959 were:
Watusi Blue Denim The Blue Angel The Best of Everything Some Like It Hot A Hole in the Head Solomon and Sheba Up Periscope Never Steal Anything Small Operation Petticoat House on Haunted Hill Don’t Give Up the Ship Porgy and Bess
Years later, I worked with Robert Anderson, who wrote the screenplay for The Nun's Story. He told me that they had hopes for some Oscars, but it was the year of Ben-Hur. I have another interesting, very personal connection to a 1959 film, but I better not mention it here. The film is Horrors of the Black Museum (A.I.P.), which I saw at the Deluxe Theater in the Bronx.
And another 1959 film not mentioned here is everyone's favorite: Plan 9 from Outer Space.
(I see I'm in agreement with I Love Melvin regarding my two top films.)
