I tried finding it, but it isn't to be found. Back in the '70s SNL had Eric Idle from Python as a guest host. He and Dan Ackroyd did a small film called "Drag racing in America." You saw the Christmas tree lighrts get lower and lower, and when reacing the bottom we see both Ackroyd and Idle start running down the quarter mile, resplendent in black silk negligees and spike heels. After a short while, Ackroyd stops running and yells after Idle, saying, "Look, see? I keep telling you. Drag just doesn't work here in the states." Sepiatone

I have not seen this film either, but I do really want to watch its sequel, 2010: The Year We Make Contact simply because Roy Scheider is in it. I've been trying to watch as many of his films as I can recently. However, I am not sure if it is the kind of sequel that can be watched without seeing the original.
I think you would be ok to watch 2010 without having seen 2001, Broadway. The film provides some exposition that puts you in line to understand the story.
Like 2001, the story is good because author Arthur C. Clarke played a large role in determining how the story would be brought to the screen.
Hopefully you'll see 2010, and that will make you want to see 2001 as well. Kubrick was as meticulous as it gets, and it shows in his films.
I like Roy Scheider as well, and I think he's very good in this film.
