It didn't show that much at the Oscars, but MGM put out a good slate of movies this year.

This is a pretty random thought but I'm surprised to see that Twentieth Century-Fox released Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel in February and The King and I in June of the same year. I would have assumed that each would have had "event" status and would have been separated by more of a time span, especially if some of the same units within the studio were working on both.
It's fun reading these lists because of what can pop out, long-forgotten titles and little-known favorites as well as the established classics. One I was pleased to see was Universal's Never Say Goodbye, a "Douglas Sirk"-lite melodrama with Rock Hudson and Cornell Borchers done right in the middle of Hudson's big streak at Universal with Sirk but pretty much unseen today. Sirk supposedly was part of the planning stages and had a limited hand in the actual production but Jerry Hopper is the director of record. The narrative gets kind of muddled and even silly at points and Borchers isn't all that impactful, but I like it.

The narrative gets kind of muddled and even silly at points and Borchers isn't all that impactful, but I like it. NEVER SAY GOODBYE has become one of my new favorites...though I like the original, THIS LOVE OF OURS (1945) better as it has a fine performance by Merle Oberon in the role Borchers did later.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Love_of_Ours
I read that George Sanders, third-billed in NEVER SAY GOODBYE, did not like working with Jerry Hopper. Supposedly Sanders asked his pal Sirk, with whom he had collaborated on a few earlier movies, to help redo a few of his scenes in NEVER SAY GOODBYE so that Sanders could give a more effective performance in order to "save" the picture. Not sure how true all this is, but there does seem to be evidence that Sirk did come back at the end for some tinkering and possible reshoots.
Re: those 20th Century Fox musicals, you may want to look up the production dates. Maybe one of them was actually finished in 1955 and its release delayed? So even if they had been released a short time apart, there may have been more of a gap between when they were actually filmed.
I was surprised to see that Yul Brynner, who won the AA for Best Actor, did not also win the Golden Globe. Usually when a performer wins the AA for lead acting in a musical, they have also cinched the GG. But the GG for comedy or musical went to Cantinflas for AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS while the GG for drama went to Kirk Douglas for LUST FOR LIFE.
Personally I think Brynner was more effective in ANASTASIA even though it was largely a showcase for Ingrid Bergman.
