Didn't want to break your flow, so I waited until you finished, but had to note, MGM's "Green Dolphin Street" is a very good movie that gets all but no attention. Good to see how well "Gentleman's Agreement" did at the Oscars.

Good to see how well "Gentleman's Agreement" did at the Oscars. Yes, it's a landmark film...but I wonder if the preachiness of the message kept audiences away. It's one of the first Best Picture winners I've seen from the 1940s that did not crack the top ten in terms of box office dollars.
WELCOME STRANGER, the highest grosser, is a charming trifle that re-teams Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald. TCM has only aired it once, back in 2013...and I was lucky to have recorded that solo broadcast.

Oh, and I echo your sentiments about GREEN DOLPHIN STREET. It's excellent and deserving of more attention.

I'm sure you're right as the box-office numbers are a fact, but I find it a very entertaining movie despite its preachiness. I think it would have been more effective if they had pulled back a bit on the sermoning (it really gets heavy in spots), but still, the movie is entertaining. Holm's character is outstanding. I recently reviewed "Odds Against Tomorrow," which is an anti-racism movie with very little preaching as the story, for the most part, just shows how stupid and evil it is. So much more effective than obvious preaching, which hurts so many modern movies.
