www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2023-03-07/oscars-2003-harvey-weinstein-roman-polanskiInteresting article looking back at the "problematic" 2003 Oscars. Harvey Weinstein 's power weighed heavily over that night: Chicago won for best picture, Zeta-Jones won for supporting actress. Weinstein was also pushing for Scorsese to get his first win for Gangs of New York. That backfired resulting in Roman Polanski winning best director for The Pianist. They even threw in best actor winner Adrian Brody planting a kiss on Halle Berry as something that didn't age well. Polanski has since been kicked out of the Academy and Weinstein is in jail.

Polanski has since been kicked out of the Academy and Weinstein is in jail. As a result of their own doing, and the MeToo movement.

I read the article, Mayo. And I finished a true story book recently about all sorts of machinations in making SPARTACUS. Between the two, corporate America has nothin on Hollywood. There's a thread about the film, THE OSCAR, not a great movie, but now the plot doesn't seem so far-fetched, maybe even tame.

It's not pretty. Around this time every year you'll see interviews with anonymous Academy voters discussing who they voted for and why. And, no surprise, it's rarely just for the person or movie they thought was the best that year. Just look at the list of people who never won or who were never nominated. That making of Spartacus book you mentioned sounds interesting, kims. ew.com/awards/oscars/2023-oscars-secret-ballot-academy-awards-voters-share-juicy-picks/

Here's a sample from that EW article interviewing Academy voters. One 'longtime actor" points to a problem he sees :
"I think the Academy is making an effort to please everybody, and it's reflective of the state of the world, but I feel like they're being held hostage — somewhat unfairly — by the wokeness," the actor later adds, taking issue with the group's "increasingly political and increasingly commercial" tastes.
This year, he criticizes media blowback over Best Actress snubs for Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till) as going one step too far, when, despite this year's crop of nominees still being overwhelmingly white, he feels the Academy is doing its part to champion diversity in the industry.
"When they get in trouble for not giving Viola Davis an award, it's like, no, sweetheart, you didn't deserve it. We voted, and we voted for the five we thought were best," he finishes.

The anonymous director EW interviewed said the exact opposite: "I felt like people went out of their way to exclude [women], because inclusion is hard, and they're tired. The Academy still has a lot of work to do with its membership to make it more representative.... it did feel purposely exclusionary. Yes, for sure."
The anonymous actor is letting it rip: "I think Viola Davis is talented, I didn't see Woman King, but I'm a little tired of Viola Davis and her snotty crying. I'm over all of that." " I said a little prayer during TÁR that I would never have to watch Cate Blanchett act again. I thought, this has got to be the end of this, this can't go on. I think she's a talented woman, but she's so technical, she's ice cold, and I always see her acting."

Love David Byrne but that song from Everything Everywhere All at Once is terrible. It's no "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp."
