1. The Streets of San Francisco 2. Maude 3. The Waltons 4. Barnaby Jones 5. Hawaii Five O
***
Honorable mentions: Lou Grant; Cannon; Soap; Rich Man Poor Man (miniseries)

Oh yes, I'm a fan of Quincy also.
Lots of good detective/crime shows in the 70s.

Oh yes, I'm a fan of Quincy also.
Son says one of his fond childhood memories is eating lunch, usually pizza, at noon with me everyday and watching Quincy reruns. Guess daughter must have been in school at that time.
Quincy is one of the few series that I wanted to own. The dvds of that are too expensive, so I've recorded all the episodes from Cozi TV. Have purchased the M*A*S*H, the original Quantum Leap and One Step Beyond series dvds, but haven't watched any of them - go figure. Probably should add Star Trek & Star Trek NG. Think those are about the only series that I liked well enough to go that level. On second thought, I bet it's Science Fiction Theater, a 75 episode series from the 50s, that I bought instead of One Step. One with fond memories for me of viewing repeats as a child ... but there was no pizza then.

Part of the problem in figuring out what my favorite shows are from each decade is that some of these programs aired across two or more decades (example: Gunsmoke from the 50s, 60s and 70s).
But then shows like Hazel (1961-66) and The Streets of San Francisco (1972-77) aired only in one decade.
The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet was consistently good throughout its entire run (1952-66) but I tend to prefer the episodes from the 60s, because I think it's a bit more fun to see the boys starting their careers...plus there is an added element with them now married and how the new daughters-in-law figure into the family situations.
The Jeffersons is one I would put on a list for the 1980s, though its broadcast history was equally divided between two decades (1975-85). However, I just felt the writing was better in those last five seasons and the cast had defined their roles to a tee, so there are very few missteps in those later years. Also, I think the show is better when it gets away from George insulting Tom based on his skin color, which he often did in the early seasons. When they become true friends, with their bond cemented by the birth of their mutual granddaughter Jessica, it just all finally comes together and gels.

So many great stories on Knots Landing, and those guest stars...Ava Gardner, Howard Duff, Ruth Roman, Michael York and Michelle Phillips (who ended up becoming a regular cast member after Donna Mills departed).

Ignoring any rollovers from the 60s, my favorites from the 70s would be:
Doctor Who (The Tom Baker years!) M*A*S*H (All 11 seasons.) Monty Python's Flying Circus Saturday Night Live (Up to 1980. I rarely watched after the last of the original "Not Ready For Prime-Time Players" were gone.) The ABC Movie of the Week (And, yes, I'm probably cheating by classifying this as an anthology series. But so be it!)

Shoot, I forgot Barney Miller. I’ll substitute it for All in the Family in my list above. Of course you could add it to the list for 80s shows, since it ran till 1982.

I think the shows I really liked are the shows of my childhood, so 1950s and 1960s. (I'm exempting my British faves from these surveys, since they're a different kettle of fish, and there were a lot that I liked in all decades.) However, I did like a few 1970s shows, for example:
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman Rhoda Strange Paradise (Played just barely into the first half of 1970).
I did watch many of the more popular shows, and enjoyed them up to a point, but not enough to put on a list of favorites. Although I did not watch The Waltons regularly, I loved the two episodes with Beulah Bondi. I think the most moving moment of any award show ever, was when Beulah Bondi won an Emmy for her performance on The Waltons.
