Buddy Ebsen, originally cast as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, had an allergic reaction to the aluminum powder that had been dusted onto his tin makeup. He wasn't able to breathe and had to be rushed by ambulance to the hospital where he was placed in an oxygen tent and spent two weeks there before spending another month recuperating at home. In the meantime, Jack Haley replaced him as the Tin Man.
Next: Known to be tight with money (exluding Jack Benny, who, in real life, wasn't like the miserly character he played)

Bob Hope
Odd note...after playing an engagement with Bob, Ernie Pattison of the Boss Brass was given a money clip in the shape of a dollar sign. Bob gave one to everyone who played in the band. Of all the things Ernie has done, this impressed me the most and I had a hard time returning the clip to him. Googling for an image brings up a Tiffany clip. Surely not!?
Next: honored by Canada Post by being featured on a postage stamp
