Bing’s support of tape recording technology was, I’m sure, seen as a good investment by him, but it was apparently something more personal, too. He didn’t want to have to perform his weekly radio show live at the scheduled time (in fact, twice — first for the east coast and later for the west coast). He saw tape recording as the way to prerecord his show with the high audio quality that the network demanded (they had rejected disc or wire recording, if I remember correctly). Tape also permitted mistakes to be edited out before broadcast, and if the show ran long it could be pared down to fit the time slot. All of this gave Bing more time on the golf course (although he was actually a very hardworking guy, despite his laidback image).
Please pardon this brief interjection --
I want to say thank you for this information. I feel a lot better knowing that Bing taped shows rather than always being there live. I sometimes did this during the time when I was a programer for the local public radio station. I felt guilty about it, but my program was on Saturday evenings. What 20-something year old wants to spend every Saturday night in the radio station?
Thank you, and now back to your regularly scheduled shenanigans program. Programmer, too, BunnyWhit?!!

I will say that I was quite proud of the seven evening programmers we had at the station for a couple of years. We presented a different genre of music every evening from 7-11pm. My program, "Radio Reprise," was big band/standards/crooners, but I filled in on my best friend's blues show when he was out of town. I'd encouraged him to do a show in the first place, so I felt honored that he trusted me with his spot. Good times.

Of course right away my mind is shamelessly in the gutter of all the movies and tv shows that used this sly tactic as a plot device, allowing the diabolical DJ to slither out for perpetrations in the night. Clint Eastwood proved that spending too much time at the radio station can be a problem.

Clint Eastwood proved that spending too much time at the radio station can be a problem. Laughing, galacticgirrrl... Possibly his quintessential film: a jazzbo behind and in front of the camera and a bit sketchy where women are concerned. (I once vowed that I would never again suggest a Clint Eastwood movie to any woman after being embarrassed by watching an Eastwood double bill, which contained sexist b.s. in both, with a girlfriend.)

Thank you NoShear for reminding me - Happy International Women's Day to Clint and his fellow men everywhere. (stay away from the brown mushrooms though would be my suggestion) Man eager girls. He must love to stay aliveI officially have given up on being offended today after reading about from whence cameth (typo intentional) my favorite Alice Cooper song. Life is a Most Dangerous Game it seems and I intend to apply for a game-warden license post-haste. The Animals - It's My Life (Live, 1965)

The Animals' set looks like its designer had gotten into my dad's stash of PLAYBOY magazines.
