"You're here because Townsend wouldn't have you at the price."
Ouch (but true)

Beulah Bondi, who appeared in RAIN, was also cast in this movie.
But her scenes were cut...in retakes, her role was recast.
Any idea why? Apparently test audiences felt some scenes were too drawn out, so the studio was forced to cut sections and cover the gaps with short retakes.
The film did not do very well in North America. It turned a profit because it was more popular in Europe and Asia.

Herbert Marshall was 44 here. I think he looks even younger. It makes me feel even sorrier for him.

When he asked her if she still loved Townsend I expected her to say she despised him now.

Some of the sets were reused by MGM for THE GOOD EARTH (1937).

When he asked her if she still loved Townsend I expected her to say she despised him now. I've seen it before and was caught by surprised by that response. My memory was she had made the turn and saw Townsend for the louse that he is and her husband for the good man that he is by that point.

She is now totally dedicated to her husband and his work.

MGM remade the story as THE SEVENTH SIN (1957). That time Eleanor Parker had the lead role.

A few extra notes...
In the book, Walter gets cholera due to experiments he conducts on himself. He dies, and she is pregnant (not knowing the paternity). She goes back to live with her father, since the mother has died, and she feels she can help her father the way she did not help her husband.
Also in the book, she meets up with Townsend again while pregnant, and she resumes romantic relations with him. So it's fair to say that as Maugham originally wrote it, she probably desired Townsend more...but I would imagine the production code necessitated her not going back to the lover, with the husband not dying so she could restrengthen her marriage.

It's been several years since I've seen it - probably when it played on cable a year or so after its release - but I remember thinking the 2006 version with Naomi Watts and Ed Norton is outstanding.

Yes, thank you Andrea for selecting this film. I had never seen it before.
It has a 6.5 overall rating on the IMDb...but I rated it an 8.
