Since when is 36 middle-aged for a woman?? I genuinely think many thought that way in the 1950s. I think the writer meant to say that she'd be considered a spinster if she was well beyond 30 and still not married. But calling her middle-aged, when people were living to their 90s and 100s in the 1950s seems a bit extreme.

In particular death in childhood became far less common and by the early 1930s life expectancy for a man at birth was about 60. By the 1950s it had risen to about 65.
