STAR OF THE MONTH: CELEBRITY CRUSH (Challenge No. 1) — DANNY KAYE
It sounds crazy, I know, but I had a tremendous crush on Danny Kaye when I was a very little kid. It probably worried my mother that at the age of three I went around talking about Danny Kaye in such fond terms. I found him funny, charming, and sincere, all attractive attributes of which I’ve never tired. Though not devastatingly handsome (in my book), I do always think of him first when the question of movie crushes arises.
(AND WILLIAM HOLDEN – When I was older, I found William Holden and discovered that it sure was nice to gaze upon an actor who had a handsome face, trim physique, and a strong, clear voice holding up a midwestern accent. These also are attributes of which I’ve never tired.)

TCM SPOTLIGHT — THE ICONIC WHITE DRESS
There are many white dresses in film that really pack a punch. The best ones stand out without ever reminding you of a wedding gown.

The Seven Year Itch – Designed by Charles Le Maire, Marilyn Monroe found a subway grate in THAT white dress. But there is also the white dress with those straps she couldn’t fasten. This film is a twofer!
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – Elizabeth Taylor floats down the stairs in the beautiful white dress designed by Helen Rose.
Roman Holiday – Audrey Hepburn wears a lovely white lace tea dress in the final scene of the film. The dress was designed by Edith Head, and Hubert de Givenchy reworked the bodice for Hepburn to wear to the Academy Awards ceremony.
The Band Wagon – Cyd Charisse wears a pretty white dress designed by Mary Ann Nyberg to dance in the dark with Fred Astair
Pillow Talk – Doris Day wears a lovely backless white gown designed by Jean Louise.

SILENT SUNDAY NIGHT
Celebrated Soviet Cinema
Earth [Zemlya] (1930). Award-winning Aleksandr Dovzhenko (1894-1956) directed Earth, the first Soviet film about collectivization. The film highlights the shift from agrarian to industrial society. The film was not released in its entirety in Russia until the 1970s. This film was added to the UNESCO list in 2015.

Mother [Mat] (1926). Based on Maxim Gorky’s 1906 novel of the same name, Mother was directed by Soviet heavyweight Vsevolod Pudovkin. It is the story of a family suffering through a workers’ strike. The cinematography by Anatoli Golovnya is beautiful.

TCM IMPORTS
Soviet Chamber Films
By the Law [Po zakonu] (1926) is based on the Jack London stories “The Unexpected” (1905) and “Just Meat” (1906). A group of Yukon gold prospectors must decide if they should wait until the thaw for authorities to arrive or administer justice on their own.

Bed and Sofa [Tretya meshchanskaya] (1927) is the love story of a young couple and their live-in friend, and is based on the real life story of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, his muse, and her husband.

Each of the films in Silent Sunday Night and TCM Imports were made before the Cultural Revolution, making them expressions of creativity rather than propaganda for the State.

TCM UNDERGROUND
Jail Bait (1954) and Mesa of Lost Women (1953) use the same musical composition by Hoyt Curtin for the soundtrack. The third film in the group also employs music composed by Curtin.

THE ESSENTIALS
Rod Serling wrote the teleplay for Patterns which aired on the Kraft Television Theater in 1955. It garnered Serling the first of his half-dozen Emmys. The airing was so well received that Kraft rebroadcast a second live performance the following month. Serling also wrote the screenplay for Patterns. The film was generally well received and featured some of the ensemble cast that had been in the television performance. Especially fine performances in the film were turned in by Van Heflin, Everett Sloane, and Ed Begley. Some exceptional dialogue proves that Serling had his finger on the pulse of corporate greed and power-mongering.

NOIR ALLEY
In Larceny and Hidden Fear (1957), John Payne can’t seem to get away from counterfeit bills in this fake paper double feature.

CHALLENGE No. 2: BACKGROUND FILMMAKER – DIALECT COACH ROBERT EASTON
Robert Easton overcame a severe childhood stutter after his parents divorced and he moved with his mother to Texas. It was then that he began to understand regional dialects. He developed various Texas sounds which he used in his early acting work, but when he tired of playing dopey country hicks, he knew fostering different sounds would broaden his opportunities. As Easton learned various U.S. dialects and world accents, his acting work became much more varied. His peers noticed and asked for instruction. This became Easton’s side work, then his primary work. He taught a multitude of actors and actresses as well as professionals from other fields. Some of Easton’s stand-out students include:
Sean Connery, Julie Christie, Richard Harris, Charlton Heston, Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, Sir Laurence Olivier, Al Pacino, Gregory Peck, and Forest Whitaker.

CHALLENGE No. 3: ADOPT A PET! – ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL
Film is full of all manner of creatures we’d want to take home and love. The animals featured in the films for this week have become lost. We want to adopt them all as they carry out their mission to make it back home or to find a new one. Until they find their way, let’s adopt them into our hearts. (If you make it through The Bear with dry eyes, you might be a robot.)

CHALLENGE No. 4: THANKSGIVING – THE PLYMOUTH FOUR
Four adult women among the Pilgrims survived the first winter: Eleanor Billington, Mary Brewster, Elizabeth Hopkins, and Susanna White. Together they prepared the first Thanksgiving feast for the fifty Pilgrims and ninety Natives in attendance. It need not be November to honor these women, and I do so here by programming films featuring characters with each of their given names:

Eleanor – Sunrise at Campobello (1960) featuring Greer Garson as Eleanor Roosevelt
Mary – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) featuring Donna Reed as Mary Hatch
Elizabeth – The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934) featuring Norma Shearer as Elizabeth Barrett

CHALLENGE No. 5: FIX THE OSCARS – COMPETITIVE AWARD FOR LILLIAN GISH
With a career that spanned eight decades, Lilliah Gish was known as the First Lady of American Cinema. She was tough, discerning, and forthright. She never married or had children, choosing instead to dedicate herself to the hard and artistic work that was acting for film and stage. Gish was nominated for a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Academy Award in 1947 for Duel in the Sun, but never for another. She was nominated twenty years later for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in The Comedians (1968). Various other lifetime or body of work awards were given, mainly during the 1970s and 1980s, and the final award (so far) was the Online Film & Television Associations’s Hall of Fame for Acting in 2009. I guess there’s nothing to be done about Way Down East since it was made in 1920, but I believe I’d give the Oscar to Gish for 1928’s The Wind.
