How many remember in the '70's both SHA NA NA and Kenny Rogers and The First Edition had weekly syndicated musical-variety television shows? They would primarily be shown on weekends( usuallt late Sunday afternoons) and didn't last too long. I think Kenny Rogers' show was a Canadian production. And after the success and popularity of the movie COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER Loretta Lynn also had a short-lived weekend musical-variety show. And like the others I think too it was usually on sunday afternoons. Sepiatone Everybody and his brother was given a variety show back then and most were fun - Brady Bunch, Donny & Marie, Helen Reddy, Mac Davis... I remember Sha Na Na but not Kenny. I have a Sha Na Na DVD on order even though as far as I recall I didn't really like their show. You never know. Contrast & Compare

I have only recently discovered Magic Star Traveler. We have a sort of pirate tv station here that airs all kinds of oddities and rarities. It is a really strange puppet show. As I get older I seem to be less judgmental and much more appreciative of those living their dream. Or maybe I am just losing my mind. Magic Star TravelerJerry Layne www.jerrylayne.com/html/bio.htmlWorking with voices had always fascinated Jerry Layne, but it wasn't until the youngster saw Paul Winchell on television that he knew what he wanted to do with his voices. A year later he received his first professional figure(dummy), and shortly after that he then won Winchell's "Best Kid Ventriloquist" contest, which led to a teacher-protege relationship, and a friendship that continued until Winchell's death in June 2005. While in college Jerry performed on the weekends and had his own radio show on campus radio utilizing his many voices to create an entire cast of characters. While vacationing on school break in Florida, Jerry began working the hotels and clubs in Miami Beach. Upon returning to college in New York, he was a winner on the "Ted Mack Amateur Hour". After graduation, Jerry spent six month active duty in the Military, where he and his partner, "Lester", did Public Relations work for the Armed Forces. Upon release from the service, Jerry began working for Goodson-Todman TV productions, an association that lasted 14 years. During that time, Jerry worked many nightclubs in the New York area on weekends. In 1970, Jerry moved to Montreal, Canada for Goodson-Todman's "Beat the Clock". While there Jerry created and hosted a children's television game show, "Puppet People". When he returned to the United States, in 1974, Jerry began his full-time career as a ventriloquist. He has appeared as an opening act for many star performers in revues it Atlantic City and Reno, in theme parks, special events, TV shows, motion pictures, cruse ships, corporate events, and hosted 84 episodes of a children's show, "Magic Star traveler".

WINCHELL you say? One Christmas late '50's I got one of these.... Spent hours working with that pamphlet to learn ventriloquism, but got nowhere. Winchell and Mahoney was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Along with Sheri Lewis. And I also got both a Lambchop and Charlie Horse puppet for a birthday too. Sepiatone

A recent Walmart flyer had Lambchop puppets for sale - as dog chew toys! I was given a Charlie Mahoney doll recently - had no idea of all the accoutrements. Neat snap. Another puppet that sits with Charlie here is something so frightening not sure I dare post any details. Looking for info on who he is sent me down so many rabbit holes of fear and terror I may not sleep for days. WHY this was ever issued in a NON IRONIC manner - for children - I'll never understand. Kids today - all unicorns and lollipops. They'll never know the hard scrabble existence of trying to remain mentally stable under the weight of The Twilight Zone and H.R. Pufnstuf. A couple of great articles here, if you dare. I wasn't a big fan of 1970s shows, apart from this forgotten masterpiece:

Oh, boy! She Na Na was a great 50's revival act. Lasted for quite a while, too. For such a large group, all the personalities really came through.
I see that someone mentioned Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. That one was just mind-blowing! And the sort of spin-off from it was the hilarious "Fernwood Tonight," with Martin Mull, Fred Willard, Frank DeVol, and a list of unbelievably talented character actors who would show up.

Hey, Sepia, that ventriloquist stuff must have really stuck with you. In all the things you write here, I never once have seen your lips move.

Um, you DO realize it was JERRY Mahoney, not Charlie? Maybe mixing him up with Bergen's puppet Charlie McCarthy? Yes, and sadly, a generation not influenced with The Twilight Zone, the word play of Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Mad Magazine. Sepiatone

Um, you DO realize it was JERRY Mahoney, not Charlie? Maybe mixing him up with Bergen's puppet Charlie McCarthy? YES! My bad. But this made me think of a bizarre Christmas gift a CBC host just mentioned he made for his kids. He consulted an artist on this project - to take several stuffed toys they no longer played with, cut them up and merge them into one new toy. I need to go look for images of this as he said his son has kept it for years so it can't be as creepy as a franken Charlie Mahoney doll.

I liked APPLE'S WAY. Made me a quick fan of Ronny Cox. There was also a short-lived sitcom based on a comic strip called THE DUMPLINGS with James Coco and Geraldine Brooks. I liked both the strip and the show. It had a short life in '76. Sepiatone I also remember liking Apple's Way. In the same vein of Family and Eight is Enough. I'm really disappointed that I don't remember The Dumplings at all.

I made the mistake I've getting Next Step Beyond from Japan. It was dubbed in Japanese. Tucker's Witch is on Amazon. I think in the 70's they had a spin-off of Bewitch called Tabitha with Lisa Hartman. I remember Next Step Beyond but for whatever reason only remember specific episodes yet I'm sure I watched most if not all of them. I've also found a bunch of them on YouTube. Haven't taken the plunge yet. I also remember Tabitha but don't remember ever watching it. Sometimes I want to watch those shows again and sometimes I don't. I feel like some of them are best left to memory.

Some more shows I've been thinking about lately that I haven't seen since back then.
Space 1999 Logan's Run Love American Style Wait Till Your Father Gets Home
Space 1999 is available and hopefully I'll be able to watch this again. Logan's Run is also available. This show was very good and never got much of a chance. If I remember correctly it was on Monday nights up against MNFB. Never stood a chance.
Quite a few episodes of LAS are available but not all. Not sure about the last one.

I'm really disappointed that I don't remember The Dumplings at all. No worries. If memory serves THE DUMPLINGS was of that long gone breed called "summer replacements". One cute line from it stuck with me. See, the premise of the show was.... The Dumplings ran a small but popular diner. Mrs. Dumpling was the cook and a darn good one. One of the regulars was asking about Mrs. dumpling's meatloaf recipe, "You know Mrs. dumpling, I tried making a meatloaf following your recipe and it didn't turn out as good." So Mrs. dumpling asked, "Did you put in the right mix of different meats?" And the lady replied, I followed the recipe you gave me to the letter. You didn't happen to leave out something just to keep your secret safe, did you?" And Mrs. Dumpling said, "Oh, no, I'd never do that. I hate people who do that." And the lady pressed on... I followed your recipe to a T." and Mrs. Dumpling asked, "Did you put in the right amount of salt and pepper?" And the lady repeated, "Listen. I followed the recipe to the LETTER!" And then Mrs. Dumpling asked, Did you make sure to put in the right amount of love?" And the lady laughed and asked, "Love? How do you put love into a meatloaf?" And Mrs. Dumpling's answer? "The same way you put it into sex." STILL tickles me. Sepiatone

The first couple of episodes of Logan's Run aired on CBS Friday at 9-10pm and then it moved to Monday 8-9pm. I was watching but I guess one other viewer wasn't enough. There is a great article about the show and to see the people involved is impressive: The script editor was D.C. Fontana and several scripts and stories of the show were written by other massively talented science fiction authors, including David Gerrold, Harlan Ellison, and John Meredyth Lucas. The pilot was co-written by novelist William F. Nolan, co-author of the original book.
40 YEARS AGO, STAR WARS MURDERED THE MOST PROMISING SCI-FI SHOW OF ALL TIME Logan's Run is a cult movie and an even more obscure novel. But what do you know about the TV show?www.inverse.com/entertainment/logans-run-tv-series-1977-anniversary

Nor do I remember Logan's Run being on Friday nights. I always thought LR was different than other shows at that time. I do remember that the movie has been trying to be remade for quite awhile but nothing as of now. Several directors and actors tied to it. Not sure that anything will live up to the novel. Several variations on the story but not the actual one. Still think it could be a good movie and and even better limited series if it were done "correctly". My fear is that with all the new technology in film that they would rely too much on that vs. the actual story and feel of the book. If the right director was involved it may have a chance.
