Umm, what is Ivy up to? Looks like maybe she's putting a little poison in a small container for some shady reason. But then, it's darling Joan Fontaine so maybe she just needed a bit of arsenic to whiten her complexion. We shall see.
This is yet another one I've never seen and a quick look at IMBD tells me two things I like to hear, "based on a novel," and Herbert Marshall.

She's playing a desperate woman who resorts to murder in this film. It was one of her first villainous roles. So if you enjoyed watching Joan Fontaine go all haywire in BORN TO BE BAD, you'll probably enjoy this performance as well.
As most of us know, she had a fractious relationship with her sister Olivia de Havilland. Some sources claim the mother sometimes pitted the two siblings against each other. Interestingly, mom Lilian Fontaine appears in IVY, in a small role alongside her daughter Joan. They both costarred again in THE BIGAMIST. A quick check on the IMDb reveals that Lilian never costarred on screen with daughter Olivia.
As you can see looking at this publicity photo from IVY, Joan physically resembles Lilian.

From TCM's article on the film:
The title character, played by Joan Fontaine, is a beautiful and seemingly sweet yet ruthless woman who cares only for riches and the lovely things they can bring her. Already involved in a loveless marriage and a fading love affair, Ivy sets her sights on the congenial and super-rich Miles Rushworth (Herbert Marshall). When he refuses to become involved with a married woman, she plots to slowly poison her husband (Richard Ney) and frame her lover (Patric Knowles) for the murder, freeing herself of both bothersome men in her life and moving on to richer pastures.
Every awful thing Ivy does is in the name of beauty: glittering gowns, enormous hats, jeweled handbags. Her accoutrements are the content of the film; they drive Ivy to commit reprehensible acts.
The capable supporting cast is headed by Sir Cedric Hardwicke as the Scotland Yard inspector investigating the case, Una O'Connor as a fortune-teller who sees Ivy's future all too clearly, and Lucile Watson as Knowles's mother. Lillian Fontaine, the star's mother, appears as Lady Flora, whose daughter is engaged to the Marshall character.
Up to this point Fontaine's best-known roles had been those of shy, retiring heroines in such movies as Rebecca (1940) and Suspicion (1941). The former had brought her a Best Actress Academy Award nomination and the latter the Oscar itself. Ivy not only shattered the typecasting mold for Fontaine, leading to more complex and not always sympathetic roles, but established her as one of the movies' true beauties.

Fawn: "Did you get everything for our movie?"
Me: "Yes."
Fawn: "I don't want to complain, but I noticed the couch pillows weren't fluffed."
Me: "Did you now. You know, in the wild, you'd have to forage for your food and sleep on the cold, wet ground?"
Fawn: "Which is exactly why I don't live in the wild."
Me: "I'm just noting, it might toughen you up."
Fawn: "Can you reach the ottoman okay? I know you like to have your feet up during the movie. Also, would you like me to get you your heated blanket or is it not cold enough yet?"
Me: [mutering] "Fair point."

...
In that day, that's a very "unladylike" way for a woman to sit, which is all part of her character and speaks to the attention the studios gave to every detail.
